By the Numbers: tough weekend for Wave
.371: The batting average for Tulane shortstop Brennan Middleton after he had three more hits against Northwestern State on Tuesday, an incredibly high average for a nine-hole hitter. Middleton engaged in a fascinating duel with UCF nine-hole hitter Travis Shreve (.360 batting average) last weekend. Shreve was 6 for 12. Middleton was 5 for 12. Both of them have to be close to the top in the nation for their spot in the order.
1: The number of Conference USA home games Tulane has won in its last nine at Turchin Stadium. The Green Wave ended the 2011 regular season by getting swept by East Carolina, won 1 of 3 from Rice in its first league home series this year and got swept by UCF, losing by 1, 1 and 2 in a heartbreaking weekend. Granted, East Carolina was a No. 2 seed in an NCAA regional last year and Rice and UCF likely will be No. 1 seed this season, but it's hard to reach the postseason when you can't win at home.
