Green Wave coach Ed Conroy excited about guard play
The Tulane basketball team can improve to 3-0 on Saturday afternoon by beating Loyola (Ill.) at Devlin Fieldhouse. A day before the game, coach Ed Conroy talked about his team's road win at Southern on Wednesday, the progress of his guards and the lack of progress of his centers, among other topics.
How pleased were you with the performance against Southern?
"Any time you go on the road and can get a win, especially with all the inexperienced guys we have, it's fun and gratifying, but we know we still have a lot of work to do. But to see these guys, because they have worked so hard, to have success (is gratifying), and then especially our backcourt, which there was a lot of questions about in the offseason. I had a lot of confidence in them in the offseason and told everybody that from day 1. But I had the benefit of seeing them every day, and I knew what they were capable of doing. I knew how what we do fit them. I was still thrilled to see them show everybody what they can do."
What are your impressions of Loyola. I know their Kansas transfer (guard Milton Doyle) has had two huge second halves so far (scoring 35 of his 41 points after the break in a 76-72 win against Milwaukee and a 74-69 loss at Tennessee Tech)?
"They are a dangerous team. I'm very familiar with their first opponent. My brother is an assistant at UW-Milwaukee, and that was a very good win for them. They are a team, their ball-screen attack, their ability to get guys in the paint and score, we're going to have our hands full with some tough matchups."
Lou Dabney had a big game against Southern (24 points, nine rebounds). I know that was not surprise to you, but talk about his performance.
