Walk-on wideout Carlos Wilson impresses
Tulane's extraordinary depth at running back chased Carlos Wilson to wide receiver last spring. Now he is on the verge of accomplishing something even more extraordinary - earning significant playing time at an unfamiliar position as a walk-on redshirt freshman.
The lack of numbers at his new spot helped. Only four scholarship receivers returned for the Green Wave this fall, and they combined for 64 catches a year ago, barely more than departed senior Casey Robottom had (56).
But Wilson earned his way into the mix. Although he was shut out in Saturday's scrimmage, he caught as many passes as anyone on the roster in the lead-up and subsequent practices.
"Last year during this time I didn't get any reps," he said. "If I got two reps a day, I was happy. It was a good day. Now I've gone from two to 20 or 30. Nobody's spot is guaranteed, but I feel I've put myself in the best position to see the field this year."
