What they're saying about Tulane
This is the first in a two-part series about what the major college football preview magazines are saying about Tulane. First up: Phil Steele's College Football Preview, the bible of preview magazines for most folks, and Athlon Sports College Football.
Phil Steele is the only prognosticator who predicts Tulane will play in a bowl game. He has the Green Wave in the New Orleans Bowl against Louisiana-Lafayette, forecasting a third-place finish in Conference USA West behind Tulsa and Rice and ahead of Louisiana Tech, North Texas, UTEP and UTSA. He also ranks Tulane the eighth-most improved team in the country. He sees the Wave averaging a touchdown more than last year despite the loss of quarterback Ryan Griffin and giving up at least a touchdown less with the return of seven defensive starters.
Interesting takes: Steele believes Tulane will have one of the most improved running back corps, offensive lines and defensive lines in the country thanks to Orleans Darkwa's return to health, the return of Josh Morgan and the arrival of Chris Davenport.
Steele expects the Sun Belt additions to C-USA to struggle mightily, picking Middle Tennessee, Florida Atlantic and FIU fifth, sixth and seventh in the East and North Texas in a tie for fourth in the West. Of the eight C-USA holdovers, only UTEP (fifth in the West) is lower than third.
