Green Wave survives scare in final minute

NEW ORLEANS - Josh Davis, Jordan Callahan and Ricky Tarrant combined to score 52 of the Tulane men's basketball team's 68 points as the Green Wave hung on to defeat visiting Southern, 68-65, on Saturday night in Devlin Fieldhouse.

Tulane (4-2) scored the first 11 points of the game before the Jaguars (1-5) got on the board and never trailed in the game. Southern got on the board with a free throw by Jayan Mitchell with 15:34 left in the opening half. The Jaguars eventually got as close as five, 15-10, with 11:29 left in the half before Tulane built a double digit lead again and led, 34-21, at the break.

The Green Wave then built a 17-point lead, 50-33, with 13:54 left in the game before Southern rallied to get as close as two points with 0:15 left. The Jaguars used a 14-4 run to cut a 63-51 Tulane lead down to 67-65.

Kendall Timmons connected on two of four free throws in the final 23 seconds to help Tulane hang on and the Jaguars' Derik Beltran missed a 3-pointer with 0:03 left that could have tied the game.

"We talked about Southern was going to give us a great effort and how important it was going to be start well," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "Certainly we needed every one of those points the way the game turned out. I was really proud of our guys for how they played with great energy in the first half. Then about midway through the second half it seemed like we died a little bit and we were fortunate to hang on."

The win moved Tulane to 4-0 at home this season.

Davis led all scorers in the game with 20 points and added a career-high 16 rebounds for his fourth straight double double for Tulane. Callahan and Tarrant each added 16 points, while Timmons finished with 10. Tarrant dished out five assists and drained four 3-pointers, while Callahan hit three long range shots.

Jameel Grace led Southern with 18 points, while Malcolm Miller added 16, Beltran had 14 and Mitchell chipped in 13.

Southern's comeback was made possible because of a shooting turnaround. The Jaguars hit just eight of 27 shots from the floor in the opening half and knocked down 16 of 27 in the second half. They finished the game shooting 44.4 percent.

Tulane shot 38.8 percent from the floor for the game and shot 45.5 percent in the second half. The Green Wave hit seven of 16 from 3-point range and knocked down 23 of 32 free throws.

Southern, which won the rebounding war, 35-34, hit 12 of 17 from the line.

Tulane will continue the homestand on Tuesday night when they welcome cross-campus foe Loyola into Devlin Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. CT tip.
