Tulane adds DE transfer Tyler Gilbert
On the eve of Tulane University's 2013 preseason football camp, second-year head coach Curtis Johnson announced the addition of former John Curtis Christian High School standout Tyler Gilbert for the upcoming season.
A 6-3, 244-pound native of Sorrento, La., Gilbert comes to Tulane following stints at North Carolina Prep, the University of Arkansas and Southwest Mississippi Community College. A rising junior, he will be eligible to play for the Green Wave right away and has two remaining years of eligibility.
As a prepster at John Curtis and coach J.T. Curtis in 2009, Gilbert posted 36 tackles, seven sacks and an interception while helping lead the Patriots to a 13-1 overall record, a district title and an appearance in the state championship game. From there, he went to North Carolina Prep where he logged 62 stops and five sacks en route to a 9-1 record for coach Tim Newton.
Following his prep school season, Gilbert joined Bobby Petrino at Arkansas where he appeared in five games and logged three assisted tackles and a quarterback hurry. Gilbert posted single-tackle outings that year against Missouri State, New Mexico and Tennessee while also seeing action against Auburn and Mississippi State. Off the field, he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
He then transferred to SMCC where he played in six games and tallied 13 tackles (6 solo, 7 assists) with a half tackle for loss. Gilbert recorded a career-best seven stops (5 solo, 2 assists) at Itawamba, had three tackles (1 solo, 2 assists) at Copiah-Lincoln, and added two assisted tackles and a stop for an 11-yard loss at Hinds.
Gilbert is the second junior-college transfer to join the Green Wave for the 2013 season and the third with Division I experience, joining quarterback Nick Montana - who played at Washington in 2011 and at Mount San Antonio College last year - and defensive lineman Chris Davenport - who played the last three seasons at LSU.
