CB transfer from Memphis eligible immediately

Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson announced today the addition of transfer Taurean Nixon to the 2013 Green Wave squad. Nixon will have two years of eligibility remaining at Tulane.

A 6-0, 185-pound junior cornerback from Baton Rouge's (La.) Southern Lab High School, Nixon played two seasons at the University of Memphis in 2010 and 2011. He started in 15 of 19 career games for the Tigers and produced 48 tackles (38 solo), including 2.5 stops for lost yardage, with one interception and caused one fumble.

As a sophomore, he played in 10 games with nine starts at cornerback and accounted for 29 tackles (25 solo), including one stop for lost yardage, logged one interception and caused one fumble. His best game came against Arkansas State when he finished with a season-high nine stops, while adding six tackles at Tulane and five against SMU. Nixon posted his first career interception against Austin Peay.

In 2010, he was one of 11 true freshmen to log action, and one of six true freshmen to earn a starting role in at least one game. Nixon saw his first collegiate action against UTEP and closed out the season with a season-best six tackles vs. UCF. He completed his freshman campaign with 15 tackles and also tallied four kickoff returns (in four different games) for a total of 53 yards.

Nixon prepped at Southern Lab High School under coach Michael Roach and was a three-star defensive back by Rivals.com. He was also rated No. 42 on the Louisiana Top 50 by Rivals.com. Nixon was named the District 6-1A Defensive Most Valuable Player and was tabbed to the 1A all-state team as a defensive back by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He was also named to the second team as an athlete and for his special teams play.

Nixon was the captain of his squad and led the 2009 Kittens to a 7-4 record, and was one of 20 finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman award. He was also selected as a 2009 Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Week for seven weeks, and garnered Old Spice Player of the Year honors. Of the 23 passes attempted in his territory, only one was a completed attempt.

Nixon participated in the 8th Annual U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl All-Star game in Baton Rouge following his senior season and also played in the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl. He also lettered in track and was ranked No. 10 nationally in the 100 meters. Nixon claimed state titles in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and garnered a state championship in the 100 meters and recorded a second-place finish in the 200 meters in 2010.
